THE PROGRAM AT LOUIS CHILDREN’S CRISIS CENTER

Picture
Louis Children’s Crisis Center offers therapeutic shelter for abused and neglected children in Houma, Louisiana.   It operates three neighborhood-based homes with twenty beds which are licensed, regulated and inspected by the State of Louisiana.  At present, the Staff represents a combined  157+ years of direct care experience.

The Program provides abused children with safety and security, nurturing, structure, motivation-based behavioral methods,  and therapy.  We have witnessed some remarkable healing and transformation over the years through this time-tested formula.

The main house, Chateau St. Martin, was built in the late 1800’s and sits on acres of rural farmland.  It provides wonderful opportunities for outdoor enjoyment and activities and serves as the base for recreation. Many organizations plan events for our children at Chateau that include barbecues, fish frys, watersliding, sports, and bike/scooter riding.

Tutors are provided for the children while in school and they participate in all school activities and organized recreational sports.   During the summer, our children regularly swim, attend fairs and festivals, take  swamp and nature tours, visit museums, bowl, and even take  hip hop class at a local dance studio.

Each child is observed 24-hours a day, and information is collected and analyzed about the triggers for negative behaviors, successful methods of intervention and redirection, and particular motivators for good behavior.   We also look to discover each child’s talent or aptitude and give them the tools for exploration of it.  We have provided art lessons, voice lessons and dance lessons for various children.

Advances in nutrition knowledge have been adopted for the Program, and most processed foods have been eliminated from the food plan.  There is a focus on plant-based food including daily fresh fruits and vegetables, lean and hormone-free proteins, and home-cooking.

The children participate in structured therapeutic activities that help them grow emotionally, physically and intellectually.  In addition to individual and group therapies, early life skills training that prepares them for future independence are initiated.

Many of our children move on to successful foster and adoptive placements, and many children who have passed through the doors return as adults to visit having formed strong bonds while here.  Some have even returned to work here as Staff.

Our tri-parish community is wonderfully supportive of the Center and our children enjoy much love and generosity.
